Javelin National Titles 2012-13
In the early 80's Peter Sharp first sailed a Javelin with his brother Lloyd. At the time they became the best Victoria had to offer, however they never managed to capture the National Title. Nearly 30 years later and now sailing with his son Lachlan on Razor, the father and son team have sailed consistently to take out the Zurich 2012-13 Javelin National Title at Cairn Curran Sailing Club.
When the siren sounded at 1.30 to signal that the final days sailing had been abandoned due to a lack of wind Peter and Lachlan received a warm reception from the sailors and spectators. Peter was promptly thrown fully clothed into the lake with his wallet still in his pocket, a small price to pay for the popular win. Peter and Lachlan were presented with the National Championship Trophy by former Champions Brett Williams, this years runner up and Chris Woodward who took out third place, both men have competed against Peter since those early days and provided fond memories of past competition.
It was fitting that having first sailed with his brother in the class and now with his son, Peter and Lochlan were the first recipients of the Ballard Perpetual Trophy given to the first family over the line. Peter also won back to back the class Senior Trophy, which in Peters words placed him somewhere between Juniors and the really old guys who are eligible for the Masters Trophy.
The other big winner of the championships was Nakita Thomas who took out both the Junior Helmsman and Ladies Champion Trophies for the second year and along with her crew Ashleigh Bright in Pegasus was placed 4th overall just 1 point shy of Chris Woodward and Russell Hanrahan on Racing Red in third position, with Brett Williams and crew Tim Fountain finishing in second place on Honky.
Many of the competitors boasted that the regatta was one of the best they had attended and that those that didn't make the journey to Central Victoria and Cairn Curran Sailing Club missed out on an exceptional titles. The club allowed sailors and family's to camp at the club and with 3 healthy meals provided every day, great club facilities and above all fantastic winds the titles were a huge success for the Club and the Class. Further with a number of competitors and families staying in Maldon and Buringyup the local economy also received a boost.
