It’s been such a busy month there are two newsletters!
Blue Green Algae
The warning issued by GM Water continues. Information is available from their website.
Please make yourself aware of the possible consequences before deciding to swim or sail.
Training Program
Our “Keep Sailing” program has been postponed because of the Blue Green Algae outbreak and will be resumed when conditions allow. We will keep you posted.
As you may have seen on our Facebook page, several of our trainees, assisted by Josh Hall and Andrew Kean, attended the Victorian Junior Carnival and the Schnapper Point Regatta at Mornington Yacht Club. Congratulations to all for attending.
Royal Brighton Yacht Club Youth Training program have moved to RS Quests recently and have generously gifted two 12’ Cadet Dinghies, that they no longer use, to our club.
CCSC has allocated these boats on extended loan to current trainees and we look forward to seeing them being sailed regularly.
The club also purchased three Pacers from Royal Brighton that were excess to their requirements.
The boats will be tidied up and prepared to be put into service for the next season. Anyone with some free time who wants to assist talk to Andrew or Craig.
Thank you to Peter Weiss for assisting Andrew Kean with the collection of these boats.
CCSC v BeYC Challenge
On Saturday 10 February the annual Cairn Curran Sailing Club Vs Bendigo Yacht
Club Challenge took place at Cairn Curran in a nice 10 knot Nor’ Westerly.
CCSC reclaimed the cup. The results were:
Division One 1st Craig Ginnivan in Finn “Moves like Jagger”, 2nd BeYC Chris & Toby Clarke in Tasar “Aquaplane", 3rd CCSC Mark Teasdale & Mike McCarthy in Hartley 16 "Silver Fox".
Division Two 1st BeYC Mick Floyd in Mosquito “Totally”, 2nd CCSC Joey Norris & Steve Parsons in F18 “Final Thrust”, 3rd CCSC Glenn Weeks in Paper Tiger “Aeroticat”.
Fiercely contested annually since February 1977, this year was no exception.
Bendigo Yacht Club dominated the early years of the event winning 16 of 20 challenges.
Now held 39 times, the ledger is Bendigo 24 – Cairn Curran 15.
The event was not held on 6 occasions due to drought conditions.
After the passing of Jack Ginnivan in 1992, it was decided by both clubs to name the event in honour of him. Jack, a founding and life member of the CCSC, was also instrumental in helping set up the Bendigo Yacht Club. In 1993 Cairn Curran came away with the win for only the 5th time in its history.
In 2011, with Craig Ginnivan as Commodore of CCSC, it was decided to rename the challenge to have a Bendigo representative involved. Jack’s good friend John Hawkins, also a keen sailor who had passed away 10 years ago, was named. The event became the ‘Jack Ginnivan/John Hawkins Challenge’.
Private Function
The 60th Birthday party held at the club on Saturday 17 February was a success and we thank our club members for their support of events and efforts that raise funds for the club.
In particular we would like to thank the following members for being bar tenders for the evening – Josh Hall and Glen Ballinger did the first three-hour shift followed by Chris and Sharon Telford and Michael McCartney who helped with the clean-up at the end of the night and didn’t make it home until 1.30am. In addition, Chris Telford was on duty for the afternoon racing and was back at the club on Sunday to remove the rubbish and check the club was cleaned. Outstanding effort by Chris.
Vale
It is with regret that we advise members of the recent death of Mr John Wayne Wagstaff. The Wagstaff family has been connected with CCSC since it’s very beginnings and we pass on our best wishes to his family.
Flying Fifteen State Titles
Taking place 24–25 March 2018. The duty roster is almost finalised and will be available shortly. Positions requiring qualifications and skills are being allocated, however there will be opportunities for other members to volunteer to assist. Again, if you can help please do so. These events are important fund raisers for the club and are good opportunities to promote our sport and meet other sailors.
Working Bee
Members are advised that a working bee is to be held 9:00am Sunday 18 March 2018.
There will be specific tasks to be completed as well as a general tidy up and preparation for the Flying Fifteen State Titles regatta. Every member is invited and welcome to contribute whenever and however possible to the maintenance and upkeep of the club and its facilities. The more people we have the easier and quicker it will be done. Please don’t leave it up to the “same old crew”.
