Congratulations to Peter Bartels and our Rear Commodore Darren Hocking for winning the recent Flying Dutchman Victorian Championships at Royal Brighton Yacht Club, completing the eights race series with with 10 points, and winning on a count back (results here).

Working Bee
There will be a brief working bee 9:00am Sunday 28 July, immediately prior to the AGM, and before the Impulse Training event the following weekend 3 & 4 August.
Yard and general clubhouse clean up, stack firewood, clean gutters etc. More detail to come.

General Meeting

Members have to opportunity to raise matters or make suggestions about the running and operation of the club at the general meeting under Item 3. Other business.
Input from members will be noted to be taken on board for consideration by the incoming committee, no formal advice from members is required in advance of the meeting, it’s an opportunity to have your say. 

BBQ lunch
Following the working bee, AGM & GM the club will host a BBQ lunch for members, it would be great to have an indication of numbers for catering purposes.
Please notify the Secretary if you are an apology (not able to attend the AGM).

Proxy voting
Members eligible to vote that are unable to attend may complete a proxy form enabling another member to vote on their behalf.

Determination of Subscriptions and fees
The General committee agreed at the June meeting that: 
• A 3% increase in membership fees for coming season, for member approval at the AGM 
• Existing Joining fee to be abolished. Proposal to be put to the members at AGM

Committee nominations
All committee positions will be vacated at the AGM. Link to current committee list.
Eligible members may nominate themselves or another member (with their acknowledgement) for any position, use the nomination form.

Craig Conn, resigned as Secretary back in May due to an increased workload making it difficult to attend committee meetings and fulfil the requirements of the role. Thank you to Craig for the time and effort he was able to put into this important position for the benefit of the club and it’s members.

Thanks also to Darren Martin for stepping in as the interim Secretary. Please support Darren in this role as he gets up to speed on things. Correspondence can continue to be addressed to secretary@ccsc.org.au

What makes the club work?
We should not take people’s time and good will for granted, any member that is unable to continue in a role they’ve currently been performing might like to let the Secretary know, before the AGM.
We’re not a big club with less than 60 full members—many who take on the same roles, often more than their share, year after year—new members are invited to consider how they are able to contribute to the running of this great club. A list of committees and sub-committees is on the meeting agenda, or discuss with other members.

The CCSC adopted the Model Rules of Incorporated Associations in November 2016. 
A revised version complete with bookmarked/navigable rules is available as a PDF and on the club website. Rules regarding the conduct of meetings (AGM) and eligible members etc. are to be found in this document.

An ‘Anniversary’ season
Season 2019-20 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the Cairn Curran Sailing Club. Look out for notice of special events throughout the season. Work has started on the season schedule and roster, anticipate the season to commence on Saturday 5 October with the Commodore’s Trophy.

The Cairn Curran Sailing Club hosted the 2018 Flying Dutchman Australian National Championships, the 2019 Jubilee class Victorian State Championships – the J.A. Linacre Memorial Trophy, and the club’s annual regatta over the previous weekend.
The event organisers were very fortunate to have three days of breezy conditions to hold these titles. 

Flying Dutchman
An Olympic class boat from 1960–1992, five FDs sailed a total of eight races over three days with New Zealand boat No. 7 PPK sailed by Mark Henger and Matt Bismark completing the series with a total of 9 points (lowest score wins), six heat wins, including winning the Albert Gold Cup, for first place in the first race of the series. Local sailors Peter Bartels and Darren Hocking in FD no. 21 Black Jack 2nd place overall on 14 points. 3rd place in the series, Matthew Moore and Neil Kafer in No. 9 Chill I.T. While the size of the fleet was relatively small, the competition was still tough and included three times Flying Dutchman World Champions Ian McCrossin and James Cook from NSW.

Jubilee
A one class design, built for sailing three up six Jubilees competed for the 2019 J.A. Linacre Memorial Cup (named after the boat's original 1935 designer). Usually sailed on Lake Wendoree in Ballarat (and other Melbourne Bay clubs) the Jubilees were attracted to Cairn Curran by the expanse of water and prospect of more steady breezes having less interference for the surrounding landscape. Completing nine races over three days in first place overall was  Jubilee 133 Scorpion sailed by Charles Weatherly, Ben Brown and Jonah Moloney-Wise, with a total of 8 points (boats have one ‘drop’ of worst race result for the series), 2nd place Colour Me Gone J137 sailed by John Brewer, Michael Morrow and Lesley Davies, 3rd place in Jemima J116 Leonie Crosbie, Paul Crosbie and Tony Madden. The final race of the series being the Mornington trophy heat with placings consistent with the overall competition results, 1st J133, 2nd J137 and 3rd J116.

Regatta
Thirty boats in in five divisions competed in the club’s annual regatta over Saturday and Sunday last weekend. With Paul and Bronwyn Ridgway in Tasar 2871 Ridgidige taking out the overall Regatta Championship. Victorian Female Sailor of the Year 2018 Heather McFarlane in Fireball 15048 Not Your Average Rockstars, sailing with Chris Payne, taking out second place in their division and first place in the Fireball Regatta Championships. A growing fleet of junior sailors included International Cadet 9559 Resistance sailed by Ben Garner and Sam Williamson from Geelong, first place in their division. There was a terrific atmosphere about the club all weekend, I would like to thank all the members involved in the preparation, organisation and running of the event for doing such a great job, also to our visitors, thanks for coming and supporting out club, you are welcome back any time.

Discover Sailing Day
Sunday 25 November is the club’s annual Discover Sailing Day where everyone is welcome to come out to the club anytime between 10am – 4pm and be taken out for a sail with a club member, no experience necessary, it’s free and a lot of fun. 
Just bring some clothes that can get wet and an adventurous spirit!

Classic Dinghy Class Invitation Weekend
The club is also hosting this event over the coming weekend 24 & 25 November, in conjunction with the Victorian Classic Dinghy Network. There will be lots of boats that you don’t see getting around so much any longer. Sailing enthusiasts from all over Victoria and beyond will converge on CCS to display, discuss, debate the finer points and merits of, recall past spectacles, recount local folklore, and sail their beloved crafts, it’s a great opportunity for members of the public to see working examples of the recent history of small boat sailing in Australia, we look forward to seeing lots of people there.

In almost  repeat conditions of the previous week, Race officer Darren Ballard made the difficult call to abandon racing due to the prevailing high winds, and the forecast for them to increase during the afternoon. Several members had already made their decision not to race, regardless. Chas Thompson and Josh Hall ventured out (briefly) for a sail in Tasar, 'Loddon Calling', entertaining other club members that were keeping a watchful eye from the comfort of the lounge with the fire stoked up, offering advice and critique on their performance and adventures. Chas did drop the mainsail and come in under jib, confirming once ashore that it was the correct call by the PRO of the day!

Fortunately the morning conditions were more moderate enabling some sail training to be done in the 12' Cadets. Joanna McLean and Zav Wilbern with Commodore Andrew Kean in one boat, while Sascha and Joanna Muller with Mabel Kean in another. The Cadet crews, who are at the end of their initial training, perform very well under the strong conditions, to their credit neither of the boats was capsized, and the trainees all took turns on the helm. We hope that these trainees will continue to develop their skills and eventually join in with the club racing program.

Next weekend is the annual passage race 'Up the Weir' where boats are sailed up to Joyces Creek and back (weather permitting) competing for the 'Jack Ginnivan Trophy'. Jack being a founding member of the club.

The next learn to sail training program is fully subscribed and the club is taking names on a wait list for next season already. The Discover Sailing Day, where members of the public can come out and try sailing is Sunday 25 November, details at ccsc.org.au

The Ballard family, CCSC and the Hartley Association all has something special to celebrate today with the launching of the newest member of the Ballard and TS16 family No. 1626  'Dadning' named after Darren's grandfather (Ralph's father) who was a master woodworker, and passed down his craftsmanship & boatbuilding skills through the generations. Something that Darren hopes to continue into the future.
After a small launching ceremony attended by family at the boat ramp, the boat's 'maiden voyage' was participation in the 'Serg Vescovi Trophy', a race held annually by the club since 1975. The boat and it's crew appeared to perform admirably, and looked a treat on the water.
Congratulations and well done to the builders Darren & Ralph, and to Tammy as first mate. May you get many years of enjoyable sailing from her… err, him?

​We had another awesome weekend at Cairn Curran. It was great to see two of our NSW brethren make the long trip to compete with us and showed they are still a force to reckon with, and great fun to drink with. Chris Dance (ex Tasar World Champion) and Jeremie Elmslie borrowed the association boat and had marked improvement during the weekend with a good win on the water in the last race, only to be over in a black flag start. However, legends Brendan Garner and Peter Durran showed their class to win with three wins in the closely packed racing. This made it two years in a row that they have won the coveted Cairn Curran Fireball Trophy. The weather was magic, the racing was close (and great) and the club was extremely friendly and accommodating. Will definitely be on the IFAV list of events next year The full results can be found here.
